Chapter Twelve
Zayne
The dim lightbulb in the corner did very little to chase away the darkness of the cell the OâDays had placed me in, and the shuttleâs engines were so loud that I had no hope of hearing anything over them. Iâd assumed Liliona was with those killers, and I hated the thought of it. She shouldnât be here. She shouldâve done what I said and stayed behind, working to move on. With this over, she might have a chance to start fresh and make her own choices.
Via shuttlecraft, the ride to Greenville was a long one, and I settled into the corner with my back to the wall. I hadnât slept the night before and was exhausted. As my mind drifted, I rested as best I could. Iâd kidnapped Liliona, and by any definition other than the archaic ones, Iâd raped her as well. I was going to die today, and I knew it. It was one thing to take your mate during estrous and another to do so outside of it. The Alpha didnât tolerate that kind of behavior, and Iâd known going in that it wouldnât end well for me, so Iâd sleep when I was dead.
I wanted to remember the way Lili felt beneath me while I could and the way sheâd occasionally smiled. I wanted to remember how sheâd changed the night of the benefit and had seemed almost accepting of me. Most of all, I wanted to remember the way her body moved over mine during the only time sheâd ever made love to me. God, I hoped sheâd be okay, but if she wasnât, maybe weâd find peace together on the other side.
Iâd known this had to end and that the ending was likely to be this one. Iâd been under no illusions that there would be a happily ever after. Had I hoped that I could win Lili over once and for all? Maybe I had, but I wanted her happy above all else, and I knew I had never made her happy. Sighing, I closed my eyes, focusing on the way Liliâs body moved in the moonlight, and drifted off to sleep.
The feel of the shuttle descending woke me, and I clamored to my feet. I felt better after the short nap and resigned to what was coming. The door slammed open, and one of the OâDays took me by the handcuffs and led me toward the capitol building. The other brother stepped to my side, and I saw Liliona and the assassinâs mate waiting at the edge of the landing pad, her eyes imploring me for something I couldnât possibly understand.
Eve rushed through the automatic doors, gathering Lili into her arms and glaring at me over her head before ushering her in one direction while the men took me in the other.
I was marched to an elevator and taken to the bowels of the building before being placed in a cell. It was a typical cell and not one made for comfort.
