Chapter Twelve

Zayne

The dim lightbulb in the corner did very little to chase away the darkness of the cell the O’Days had placed me in, and the shuttle’s engines were so loud that I had no hope of hearing anything over them. I’d assumed Liliona was with those killers, and I hated the thought of it. She shouldn’t be here. She should’ve done what I said and stayed behind, working to move on. With this over, she might have a chance to start fresh and make her own choices.

Via shuttlecraft, the ride to Greenville was a long one, and I settled into the corner with my back to the wall. I hadn’t slept the night before and was exhausted. As my mind drifted, I rested as best I could. I’d kidnapped Liliona, and by any definition other than the archaic ones, I’d raped her as well. I was going to die today, and I knew it. It was one thing to take your mate during estrous and another to do so outside of it. The Alpha didn’t tolerate that kind of behavior, and I’d known going in that it wouldn’t end well for me, so I’d sleep when I was dead.

I wanted to remember the way Lili felt beneath me while I could and the way she’d occasionally smiled. I wanted to remember how she’d changed the night of the benefit and had seemed almost accepting of me. Most of all, I wanted to remember the way her body moved over mine during the only time she’d ever made love to me. God, I hoped she’d be okay, but if she wasn’t, maybe we’d find peace together on the other side.

I’d known this had to end and that the ending was likely to be this one. I’d been under no illusions that there would be a happily ever after. Had I hoped that I could win Lili over once and for all? Maybe I had, but I wanted her happy above all else, and I knew I had never made her happy. Sighing, I closed my eyes, focusing on the way Lili’s body moved in the moonlight, and drifted off to sleep.

The feel of the shuttle descending woke me, and I clamored to my feet. I felt better after the short nap and resigned to what was coming. The door slammed open, and one of the O’Days took me by the handcuffs and led me toward the capitol building. The other brother stepped to my side, and I saw Liliona and the assassin’s mate waiting at the edge of the landing pad, her eyes imploring me for something I couldn’t possibly understand.

Eve rushed through the automatic doors, gathering Lili into her arms and glaring at me over her head before ushering her in one direction while the men took me in the other.

I was marched to an elevator and taken to the bowels of the building before being placed in a cell. It was a typical cell and not one made for comfort.
